Wisdom teeth emerge during early adult life (usually between 17 and 25). Basically, wisdom teeth are molars and are the last teeth to grow in humans. They are called wisdom teeth as they grow at a time of the human life cycle that was once known as the Age of Wisdom.
Impacted wisdom teeth
There are times when there is not enough room in the mouth for the teeth to break through the surface and grow. In such cases, the teeth will push against another tooth. They may also break through the surface and grow at an angle while still inside the gum. When this happens, dentists call it an impacted wisdom tooth. These teeth can cause a great deal of irritation and pain.
In some cases, the part of the impacted tooth may push through to the surface of the gum. The gum will as a result become swollen and sore. When food particles collect around the surface, bacteria develop and cause the tooth to decay. This type of decay isn’t easy to remove. In most cases, it results in an infection and the tooth then requires extraction.
